“Winter Lantern” is a strange little 8-bar blues that lives somewhere between loose free jazz, Sun Ra-style cosmic mysticism, a little Monk angularity, and the harmolodic spirit of Ornette Coleman. At the same time, it has a tongue-in-cheek, kitschy horror element inspired by the Winter Lantern creature from Bloodborne, one of the game’s first beings to inflict madness. That mix of beauty, unease, and creeping chaos really shaped how we approached the performance. The track features Ben "The Grand Bohemian" Tweedt on piano, Jeff Mellott on drums, Matt Wiles on bass, and me on guitar, basically what many would consider the "classic" Brandon Scott Coleman Quartet from that era (ha!). Although I only just released it on March 12, 2026, the recording actually dates back to 2021 at the now-defunct Golden Mean Studios in downtown Cincinnati. We made a lot of meaningful music in that space, and I’m grateful we captured something like this while we had the chance.
